Is MSG halal?

Quick answer: MSG is a fermentation product

Monosodium glutamate is the sodium salt of glutamic acid, an amino acid found naturally in many foods. The additive is not harvested from those foods and it is not rendered from animals. It is produced industrially by feeding sugar to bacteria, which release glutamic acid into the broth. The acid is then separated, neutralized with a sodium source, purified, and crystallized.

Where the halal question actually sits

Bacteria in a fermentation tank need more than sugar. They need a nitrogen source and various nutrients, and those nutrients are prepared from other raw materials. E621 tells you the substance is monosodium glutamate and that it is permitted as a flavor enhancer. It says nothing about the fermentation medium, the processing aids, or whether the site holds halal certification.

The names MSG hides behind

MSG is not always printed as MSG. On labels around the world it may appear as monosodium glutamate, E621, INS 621, sodium glutamate, or flavour enhancer 621. Related glutamates carry their own codes, including E620 for glutamic acid, E622 for monopotassium glutamate, and E627 and E631 for the nucleotides often blended with MSG.
