Are anti-caking agents halal?

Most anti-caking agents are minerals such as silicon dioxide. The exceptions are the stearates, which trace back to a fatty acid.

Short answer: Most anti-caking agents are minerals and raise no source question. Silicon dioxide, calcium silicate, and the carbonates are mineral derived. The exceptions are the stearates, including magnesium stearate, which are fatty acid salts and carry the same plant or animal question as the emulsifiers.

Anti-caking agents keep powders from clumping. They are usually present in very small amounts and sit near the end of an ingredient list, and as a group they split cleanly into two kinds.

The mineral ones

The majority are minerals, and minerals do not raise an animal source question.

  • Silicon dioxide (E551): also called silica, the most common of the group.
  • Calcium silicate (E552): used in salt and powdered products.
  • Talc (E553b): used in confectionery polishing and tablets.
  • Calcium carbonate (E170): also a white colour and calcium source.
  • Sodium and potassium carbonates (E500, E501): mineral derived.

The stearates

The exceptions all involve stearic acid, and they are the reason this category comes up at all.

  • Magnesium stearate: extremely common in tablets and capsules.
  • E470: salts of fatty acids, sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium.
  • E570: fatty acids, including stearic acid itself.

Stearic acid is produced from vegetable oils, particularly palm, and from rendered animal fat. The label records the salt, not the origin, which is why this is the part of the category worth a question.

Anything silicate, silica, or carbonate is mineral. Anything stearate or fatty acid needs the source question.

Why they matter most in supplements

In food, anti-caking agents are usually a minor line. In supplements they are close to universal, because tablet presses and capsule fillers need powder that flows and does not stick.
