Is stearic acid halal?

The name tells you the chemistry. It tells you nothing about which fat that chemistry started from.

And a halal certificate covering the exact finished product is strongest, because it also covers processing aids, shared lines, and the rest of the formula.

Wording that does not settle it includes pharmaceutical grade, USP, NF, and food grade. Those describe purity specifications, not origin. A product can be USP-grade stearic acid made from tallow.
