Two BCAA tubs can carry identical ingredient panels and still have different answers. The difference happened before the powder was blended.
Quick answer: ask how, not what
A BCAA label will list leucine, isoleucine, and valine, usually in a two-to-one-to-one ratio. Those names identify molecules. They do not identify origin, and there is no way to work backwards from the panel.
Amino acids reach the supplement market by three broad routes. Microbial fermentation feeds sugar to bacteria that produce the amino acid, which is then purified. Protein hydrolysis breaks down a protein-rich raw material and separates out individual amino acids. Chemical synthesis builds the molecule directly, and is less common for these three.
Why keratin is the specific concern
When amino acids are made by hydrolysis, the raw material needs to be cheap and rich in the target amino acid. Keratin fits, and the industrial keratin sources are poultry feathers, hog bristle and hair, and human hair collected in bulk.
This is best known from L-cysteine, which is widely produced from keratin and which appears on bread labels as E920. The same processing logic has applied to other amino acids, which is why the question follows BCAAs, EAAs, and standalone leucine or glutamine products rather than being unique to one of them.
Two separate issues arise. Hog-derived material is prohibited outright under any halal standard. Human-derived material raises a distinct question about the dignity and permissibility of consuming material of human origin, on which scholars and certifiers have written directly. Feather-derived keratin from permitted birds raises the ordinary slaughter question instead.
Purified L-leucine from fermentation and purified L-leucine from keratin hydrolysis are the same compound. Only a documented production route or a certificate can settle the source.
What fermentation claims actually tell you
Fermentation has become the dominant industrial route for these amino acids, and brands that use it usually say so, because it is a selling point for vegan and vegetarian customers as much as for Muslim ones.
Useful wording includes fermented BCAA, plant-based fermentation, produced by microbial fermentation, and vegan. Any of these points away from keratin hydrolysis. Wording that does not settle it includes pharmaceutical grade, instantized, micronized, and pure, which describe purity or particle handling rather than origin.
Fermentation itself introduces a smaller second-order question, since the bacteria are fed a nutrient medium. For a strict standard that is worth confirming, and it is the same issue described in the MSG guide.

Where BCAAs turn up beyond the tub
Amino acids are added to more than dedicated BCAA products. Protein powders are sometimes spiked with free amino acids, a practice that raises the same source question. Recovery drinks, energy drinks, intra-workout formulas, and some protein bars also add them. If an ingredient panel lists L-leucine, L-valine, L-isoleucine, or L-glutamine separately from the protein itself, that is added amino acid rather than protein content.

A quick BCAA label check
- Look for an explicit fermented, plant-fermented, or vegan production statement.
- If none is present, treat the amino acid source as unconfirmed and ask the brand.
- Read the flavor, color, and sweetener lines, especially on red and pink flavors.
- For capsules, identify the shell material.
- Check for added collagen, gelatin, or stearates in the Other Ingredients.
- Prefer a current halal certificate that names the exact product and flavor.

Does vegan BCAA mean halal BCAA?
A vegan claim strongly implies fermentation rather than keratin hydrolysis, which answers the main question. It is still not halal certification, because vegan standards do not review alcohol carriers in flavorings, capsule shells sourced separately, or cross-contamination controls at the blending site.
Are BCAA capsules halal?
