Are food colours halal?

The colour section of an ingredient list looks alarming and is mostly settled. One entry in the whole range is animal derived.

Short answer: Nearly every food colour is halal. The range is made up of plant extracts, minerals, and synthetic dyes, none of which involve animal material. One colour is the exception and it is worth knowing by name: carmine, appearing as cochineal, carminic acid, natural red 4, or E120, is made from insects and attracts differing guidance between certifiers. Everything else in the range is a lower priority, and the residual questions concern the carrier a liquid colour is dissolved in rather than the pigment.

A long run of E-numbers in the hundreds looks like the most alarming part of an ingredient list. In the colour range specifically, it is one of the least.

The one that needs a decision

Carmine is the only widely used food colour derived from an animal source. It is produced from cochineal insects and gives a red that holds up through heat, light, and months of storage in a way plant reds do not, which is exactly why manufacturers reach for it.

On a label it appears as carmine, cochineal, cochineal extract, carminic acid, natural red 4, or E120. Halal guidance on insect-derived ingredients is not uniform, and certifiers reach different conclusions. The carmine guide sets out the positions.

Practically, this means red and pink products are where colour attention belongs. Strawberry yogurt, red sweets, pink icing, cured meats, and some drinks are the usual places.

Shellac is not a colour, but it travels with them.

E904 is a glazing agent secreted by an insect and sits in the same animal-derived category. It appears on the same sweets and coated products, so it is worth checking alongside colour. See the shellac guide.

The plant and mineral colours

These make up most of the range and need no source question.

  • Curcumin (E100): from turmeric root.
  • Riboflavin (E101): vitamin B2, produced by fermentation.
  • Chlorophylls (E140, E141): from plants.
  • Caramel colours (E150a to E150d): heated carbohydrate. See the caramel colour guide.

The synthetic dyes

Tartrazine (E102), quinoline yellow (E104), sunset yellow (E110), azorubine (E122), ponceau 4R (E124), allura red (E129), patent blue (E131), brilliant blue (E133), green S (E142), and black PN (E151) are manufactured chemically. None involve animal material, so none raise a source question.

These colours attract plenty of debate, but it concerns hyperactivity labelling requirements and which markets permit them, not halal status. Keeping those two conversations separate saves time.

The carrier, which is the real residual question

A pigment has to reach the factory in a usable form, and many are not water soluble. Liquid colour preparations dissolve the pigment in a carrier, and that carrier may be vegetable oil, propylene glycol, glycerin, or occasionally an alcohol-based solvent.

For most standards this changes nothing, since carriers are processing inputs and the pigment is not animal derived. If you follow a strict position on alcohol in processing, the carrier is the specific thing to ask about, and it is the same question described in the annatto guide.

Where colour sits relative to everything else

  1. Scan the colour section for carmine, cochineal, carminic acid, natural red 4, or E120.
  2. Check red and pink products first, since that is where carmine appears.
  3. Look for E904 shellac alongside colour on coated sweets.
  4. Treat plant, mineral, and synthetic colours as low priority.
  5. If you follow a strict position on solvents, ask about the colour carrier.
  6. Spend the attention saved on gelling agents, glazes, and flavours.

Some liquid colour preparations do. A pigment that will not dissolve in water is supplied dissolved in something, and that carrier may be propylene glycol, vegetable oil, glycerin, or occasionally an alcohol-based solvent. This is a carrier question rather than a pigment question, and it applies to a minority of preparations.

Is titanium dioxide halal?

Titanium dioxide, E171, is a mineral and is not animal derived, so it raises no source question. It has been the subject of safety reassessment and is no longer permitted as a food additive in the European Union, while remaining permitted in other markets. That is a regulatory matter rather than a halal one.

What about colours in supplements and coatings?

Tablet coatings and capsule shells often carry colour, and the same logic applies: the pigment is rarely the question and the shell material usually is. Check whether a capsule is gelatin or a cellulose material such as HPMC before spending attention on the colour.
